Get Support with Happy Hands

Posted on 2018-09-11 14:06:00 in General

According to the National Deaf Children's Society, 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents with little or no experience of deafness or knowledge of how to communicate with a deaf person. At Chime we understand how overwhelming it can be, which is why we want to spread the word about a local support group called Happy Hands.

When it comes to hearing loss, it’s really important that families don’t feel isolated and alone. In association with Babcock LDP, Devon County Council and the Deaf and Hearing Impairment Team, Happy Hands provides help to families across Devon.

For those closer to Exeter, the drop in support group is held at the Chestnut Avenue Children's Centre every second Wednesday of the month during term time. Happy Hands is the ideal place to meet other parents, grandparents and deaf adults, as well as being a stimulating environment for your child to meet other deaf children.

Happy Hands offers the chance to meet like minded people in the local community, who are affected by hearing loss, whether it be themselves or a family member. There are also opportunities to learn more sign language, new songs and have new ear mould impressions made.

Action on hearing loss estimate that there are at least 24,000 people across the UK who use British Sign Language (BSL) as their main language (although there are likely to be more that we don't know about). So, whether it’s singing, British Sign Language stories, craft activities or snack time, Happy Hands is a place to relax and enjoy!

If you’d like more information about Happy Hands including finding your nearest group, please contact Babcock LPD on 01392 287239.
